New Holland Construction is celebrating 40 years of manufacturing skid steer loaders – compact, fast-moving and versatile machines found on almost every construction, landscaping and agriculture project.

The company’s leadership in the skid steer loader category began in 1972 with the introduction of the L35, the industry’s first vertical lift skid steer loader equipped with the patented Super Boom® lift linkage.

Today, New Holland skid steer loaders are sold in 120 countries worldwide through New Holland Construction and New Holland Agriculture dealer channels.

“New Holland Construction is proud of its rich history of product innovation and commitment to quality,” said Wayne Munce, Marketing Manager, New Holland Construction. “For 40 years, equipment operators have trusted New Holland Construction skid steer loaders to earn a living and tackle a variety of construction, landscaping and agriculture applications. And for 40 years, New Holland Construction has been committed to meeting the unique needs of contractors and other construction equipment users, including tens of thousands of owner-operators who got their start in the business with a New Holland Construction skid steer loader.”

Since the introduction of the L35, New Holland Construction has produced more than 200,000 skid steer loaders.

The company’s largest selling skid steer loader model in the world is the New Holland L218 Super Boom. Rated at 42 kW (57 hp), the L218 has an operating weight of 2,660 kg (5,850 lbs) and a bucket breakout force of 24.2kN (5,435 lbs).

A special 40th anniversary logo has been created to commemorate this industry milestone. The logo will be prominently displayed at industry events at which New Holland Construction is participating this year, including INTERMAT 2012 in Paris, M&T Expo 2012 in Sao Paulo and GIE+EXPO 2012 in the United States.

Super Boom legacy continues

“The first New Holland skid steer loader literally forced the entire construction industry to try to match our Super Boom design,” said Wayne. “The Super Boom design delivers superior lift and reach, allowing New Holland skid steer loaders to load material to the centre of trucks faster and more efficiently than competitive models.”

While the Super Boom design has undergone a number of important innovations since 1972, from the original L35 skid steer loader, to the LX Series, LS Series, B Series, L Series and the new 200 Series, New Holland Super Boom skid steer loaders have remained in a class of their own.

“With a well-earned reputation for having more lift capacity and outstanding stability, New Holland Super Boom skid steer loaders can move bigger loads, resulting in increased productivity and an improved bottom line,” said Wayne.

In 2005, the first New Holland Construction compact track loaders featuring the Super Boom design were introduced as an alternative to skid steer loaders to work in tough conditions and terrain like soft or muddy ground or slopes.

Unmatched stability

The original L35 skid steer loader exhibited the same stability and low centre of gravity as the 200 Series skid steer loaders introduced by New Holland Construction in 2011.

“New Holland introduced the long wheelbase concept to skid steers loaders, and the new 200 Series machines continue that tradition with the longest wheelbase in the industry,” said Wayne. “When combined with a low centre of gravity, the result is a smooth and stable ride.”

Superior cab comfort and visibility

New Holland Construction 200 Series skid steer loaders feature the widest, most comfortable cab in the industry, providing more head and foot room, and offering superior visibility in critical zones.

“The 200 Series skid steer loaders include a number of operator comforts, like a heated and air conditioned cab and a keyless start; and productivity features like hydraulic couplers, Glide Ride and high flow hydraulics, that operators 40 years ago couldn’t possibly imagine,” said Wayne.

Attachments increase versatility

New Holland dealers offer more than 50 skid steer loader attachments including augers, brooms, dozer blades, grapples, hammers, pallet forks and rakes to handle countless applications. Operators can count on New Holland attachments to boost their productivity. For customers who frequently change attachments, the new skid steer loaders feature a hydraulic heavy-duty coupler.

“As we celebrate this significant milestone, we also recognise the many great contributions New Holland Construction employees have made over the last 40 years to produce our legendary skid steer loaders and help make this company a global leader,” said Wayne.

Case Construction Equipment’s brand new CX300C and CX350C heavy excavators are cleaner, stronger and more efficient and cheaper to run. They’re also the first heavy excavators in the Australian market to be launched with Tier 4 Interim compliant low emission engines.

“The CX300C and CX350C offer an eight per cent increase in cycle times, a five per cent increase in lift capacity and fine controllability – all in a package that is both fuel efficient and cost effective to run.”

“The Case Intelligent Hydraulic System includes a number of functions designed to ensure that the hydraulic flow and engine load is perfectly matched to the task at hand, which means that any operator can get maximum results with minimum fuel use,” said Case Product Manager, Scott O’Hare.

There are five new energy saving systems within the overall Case Intelligent Hydraulic System. These include: Boom Economy Control (BEC), which senses and controls engine load and fuel consumption during boom down and swing operation. Idle Management System (IMS) manages engine rpm, lowering engine revs after five seconds of inactivity and shutting down after three minutes of inactivity. Swing Relief Control (SWC) regulates hydraulic flow at the start of the swing operation to optimise performance while minimising fuel consumption. Auto Economy Control (AEC) improves fuel efficiency whenever the joysticks are in the neutral position, while Spool Stroke Control (SSC) senses pressure during the digging operation to further optimise the hydraulic pressure requirements for fuel efficient operation.

Like all Case excavators, the new CX300C and CX350C offer a spacious cab with generous legroom and storage space with a best-in-class operator environment delivering ultra-low noise and vibration.

A seven-inch full colour LED monitor with easy to operate controls includes camera views for increased visibility around the machine along with machine data for increased visibility into the machine’s performance.

Safety is assured with ROPS compliant cabs and hose burst control valves as standard, along with an air suspension seat for additional comfort.

“Case’s efficient Tier 4 Interim diesel engines feature Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (CEGR) and a diesel particulate diffusor (DPD) to reduce emissions without the added expense and complexity of additional diesel exhaust fluids,” said Scott.

“The automatic self-regeneration of the DPD ensures no loss of productivity while the low engine rpm, improved hydraulic pump control and additional energy saving systems boost fuel economy, with no operator input required. You can also activate a ‘green economy’ gauge in the cab to help you choose the most economical settings for the machine and view fuel consumption in real time – which is a huge benefit to operators keen to reduce fuel costs.

“We have already seen strong customer interest in these new Tier 4 Interim compliant heavy excavators and anticipate a very positive response from customers who want to reduce their fuel bill as well as from customers who want to minimise their impact on the environment, while still maintaining full productivity,” said Scott.

You’re being tracked by a satellite as you cross the desert, you’re on a mission that is 7500 km long, there is snow in the high country and 2000 km of forest riding and driving ahead of you. You just receive a text from your daughter who tells you that there are some big sand dunes ahead of you and good luck.

Has she hacked into a military website? No, she is on the Australian Property Centre Rally website following your progress.

During the rally the riders and drivers will have their skills tested by some of Australia’s most famous destinations including the Simpson desert, Flinders ranges, NSW High Country and 2000 km of the Great Dividing Range.

In the event the participants have to use a GPS unit to navigate through a large number of private properties as well as state forests and national parks. Just like the Dakar race, satellite tracking devices are used so the public can follow the bikes and cars on the internet. There were 100,000 hits on one internet site alone during the 2011 event which many have described as a life-changing experience.

There are seven starting points on the course so the riders and drivers can start and finish the loop close to where they live. There are starting points in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Australian Capital Territory.

Everyone must carry camping gear because they are traveling through very remote areas where they will have to camp for the night and continue the next day until they reach civilisation.

This is not a race; it’s an adventure. To get the Tony Kirby completion medal the participants must complete all of the designated route. In 2011 only 50% of starters completed the course and many advised if it wasn’t for the help of other riders and drivers they would have failed.

Stay tuned to WTW magazine for the full articles and videos. As publisher of WTW magazine Kurt Quambusch and Rhys Jones takes on the APC Rally 2012.

Sydney-based specialist rail maintenance, civil, plant, and labour business, Adept Civil, relies on a fleet of Kobelco excavators to deliver the company’s unique undercutting service to the rail industry together with other civil works.

“While rail ballast undercutting has been around for some time, we have developed an off-track undercutting solution that can outperform any current mid-sized excavator mounted with under cutters,” said Henri Reiche, Company Director.

“Our hydraulic SK135SR and undercutter attachments are mounted on mid-sized Kobelco excavators and, combined with our other rail-specific plant, allow us to repair small sections of track while keeping the line open to train traffic, thus avoiding the downtime associated with normal rail maintenance procedures.

“Our solution is capable of doing all undercutting works including shoulder removal, tampering, sleeper removal, rail reconditioning and other rail work.”

Adept Civil provides specialist plant, labour and construction services to government and blue chip companies in the rail infrastructure and civil sector Australia-wide. To meet business growth, the company recently added three new Kobelco machines to its existing fleet of six 13.5 tonne SK135SR long track excavators, and is expected to purchase more machines to support business growth on a continual basis.

The three new machines include a seventh SK135SR model long track excavator, a SK80MSR hydraulic excavator and a SK55SR mini hydraulic excavator. With stability, versatility and balance key features across all new models, the machines will be put to work on a continuing project for rail freight operator, QR National, and Queensland Rail.

“Kobelco is the ideal choice because, right across the range, the equipment is versatile and can be fitted with a wide variety of attachments to suit our individual business needs, ranging from undercutters, sleeper grabs to buckets for cleanup work, jackhammers and rocksaws,” said Henri.

The new Kobelco excavators have all been modified to ensure safety when working in a rail environment. Modifications include the installation of limiters to prevent the boom hitting the overhead rail lines and to ensure the boom swing is within safe working distance of passing trains.

Adept Civil was formed when it purchased three businesses more than two years ago including one that specialised in rail maintenance, one in civil work and one in rail track work and welding. With 50 staff and an annual turnover of more than six million dollars, controlled growth of 25 per cent per annum is expected over the next few years.

“We combined the divisions from the three former companies to offer government and blue chip commercial companies the complete package, from building the rail network to maintaining it,” said Henri.

When it comes to choosing new equipment to support its expected business growth, dealer relationships are important, Henri added.

“We have a good relationship with our dealer, Tri City Trucks, and keep going back because of this. We have also found Kobelco machines to be reliable and we can get a good life out of them. We turn our excavators over every 6,000 hours and we have been very impressed by their performance in field to date.”

Hino Australia is offering the added bonus of free satellite navigation and reversing camera to customers who purchase any new 300 Series model before April 30 this year*.

The Hino-Navteq truck-specific satellite navigation and sound-enabled infrared night vision reversing camera (normally plug-in options for Hino’s market-leading multimedia unit) are being offered as part of a special 300 Series promotion from February.

The addition of these special features makes the 300 Series even better value, according to Hino Australia Divisional Manager Product Strategy, Marketing and Dealer development, Alex Stewart.

“The 300 Series is already one of the most user-friendly and comfortable trucks on the road, and these extra accessories only add to its appeal and safety,” he said.

“With safety of utmost importance at Hino, we’re making the most of technologies that improve a driver’s ability to conduct their job more effectively.

“Adding our truck-specific sat-nav assists the driver in planning a route that minimises the truck’s impact on other road users.

“The night vision and sound-enabled reversing camera provides a level of rearward visibility not normally experienced by truck drivers,” Mr Stewart said.

The unique Hino-Navteq navigation system can be tailored to suit each individual truck or load, with the ability to input critical data such as the truck’s height, weight and dangerous goods classification.

The navigation system then calculates a route that avoids low bridges, weight-restricted roads and dangerous goods-restricted areas.

It can also direct the driver in one of 17 different languages.

The reversing camera is displayed on the multimedia unit’s 6.1-inch high-definition LCD display, and there is an option to add up to two additional cameras if required.

Hino Australia became the first truck manufacturer in the world to include a digital audio broadcast (DAB+) multimedia unit as standard equipment across its range of trucks last year.

Hino’s state-of-the-art multimedia unit features the large 6.1-inch high-definition LCD touch-screen, DAB+ digital radio and conventional AM/FM radio.

It also includes a CD and DVD player, USB and SD input, Bluetooth™ audio streaming and hands-free phone (with voice and one-touch dialling).

All Hino 300, 500 and 700 Series trucks manufactured from September 2011 feature the unique Australian-designed multimedia unit as factory-fitted standard equipment and can also be equipped with satellite navigation, reversing camera, iPod connection and steering wheel-mounted remote controls.

Driven by demand from the mining sector, plus natural disasters in the early part of 2011, the Australian construction and mining equipment market grew strongly in last year, according to a leading industry group.

It is expected to show further solid gains during 2012.

Construction and mining equipment sales increased by 22.9% in 2011, according to figures released by the Construction and Mining Equipment Industry Group (CMEIG) and Datamotive Business Intelligence (DBI). The 2011 rise follows an increase of 7.3% in 2010.

“Market results were relatively strong across nearly all equipment categories,” said John Reid, CEO of CMEIG.
According to Reid, the strength in the mining market made up for a relatively flat result in construction equipment sales.
”However, the aftermath of last year’s extreme weather events in Queensland, NSW and Victoria created opportunities for increased equipment sales; this was most evident in Queensland which required a massive rebuilding operation following the floods and Cyclone Yasi.

“In overall terms we expect the market to rise by 8-10% in 2012 compared with 2011 as new infrastructure projects are started and the clean-up after floods continues” he said.
Highlights of the 2011 market for construction and mining equipment include:
• The largest volume of sales was recorded in Queensland, which had 30% of the national market; this was followed by NSW with 22.8%, followed by WA with 19.3% and Victoria with 18.3%.
• Estimated value of the total market was $4.billion, a dramatic increase over 2010 results, due to a large increase in high-value mining equipment sales.
• Hydraulic excavator volumes rose by 14.4% with sales of this product group accounting for almost 41% of the total equipment market.
• Wheel loader sales increased by 35.7% reflecting improvement in construction work and increased mining activity.
• Dozer sales rose by 37% reflecting much-improved demand in the mining industry.
• Motor grader sales rose by a further 66.3%, a result of greatly increased investment by local government.
• Rigid dump truck sales had another stellar performance, increasing by 46.5% with increased demand from the mining industry, while articulated dump truck sales rose by 52% due to new infrastructure projects and flood recovery work.
• In the smaller machine markets, skidsteer loader sales rose by 6.1% while backhoe/loader sales were up by 11.3%.
• Road Roller sales increased by 86% indicating a much improved situation in road development work.
“Demand for both construction and mining machinery should increase further in 2012 as the economy continues to improve and infrastructure and mining projects are further developed,” Reid said
Copies of the DBI Annual Report are available to selected companies.

John Simons, Managing Director of Nulon Oil, was on hand to greet guests and welcome them to his facility.

“We are so happy to host this year’s launch. We’ve been involved in the Series for two years now and about to step into our third, which says it all really, the fact we keep coming back is a great testament to the category and the continued value to us,” said Simons.

Wanda Paint was announced as the “Official Paint Suppliers” for the year, which featured an unveiling of a Wanda branded Ute, that will participate in the first two rounds of the V8 Utes Season. Wanda’s General Manager South-East Asia and Pacific, Joe McFadries is looking forward to a healthy involvement with the V8 Ute Series.

“One of the key things for us, is the fan base of V8 Utes is so closely aligned with the Wanda target market. I think there is great synergy and we think they will really embrace the Wanda brand and really embrace Wanda herself. It is exciting what we’re doing in the industry and for the industry. We have been in the sport a long time and this is an extension of our commitment to the sport,” said McFadries.

The new Rodney Jane Racing wheel was on display, which will be on sale in all Bob Jane T-Mart stores, from early April. The retail wheel will be very similar to the race wheel, and will be branded as an official V8 Ute product.

Drummond Suspension was also announced as the new “Official Suspension Supplier” to the series and Make-A-Wish were confirmed as the Official Charity for the Season. The Albury based supplier has been working on the new V8 Ute control suspension for the past 6 months, and in testing the new package has proven to be better under brakes and more stable over the kerbs.

The Championship winning Ice Break Holden of Chris Pither was on display, with a tray of fresh milk handed out from the back, along with the new Coyote engined Ford FG of Ben Kavich.

“The day was a great success, it’s so good to see so many people come out and support us at such an intimate event. The Nulon facility is fantastic – it’s a great way to kick-start the year and I’m super keen to drive the Ice Break Ute again,” said Pither.

Other drivers on hand were Andrew Fisher, David Sieders, Ben Dunn and Warren Millet, who took part in signing sessions and stage talks, which were hosted by V8 Ute driver George Elliot.

Naming rights partners Armor All and Auto One were also represented at the launch, along with Official Exhaust Supplier Pacemaker Headers, and Official Brake Supplier DBA, joining the 300 strong guests attending the event.

The V8 Utes are gearing up for the first round of the Series at the Clipsal 500 in two weeks (1 – 4 March) time, and are all eager to hit the Adelaide Parklands track.

The 2012 Auto One V8 Ute Racing Series – protected by Armor All features 32 Ford and Holden production based V8 racing utes – covering 8 championship rounds, and 24 races through five states of Australia. The series is televised nationally on the SEVEN Network, through Fox Sports, TV3 New Zealand, Motors TV Europe and over 40 countries worldwide.

This is no mean feat for the 25 local employees who assemble units on-site for both Australian and export markets including New Zealand, South Africa, Egypt, India, the Middle East, the South Pacific and parts of Asia.

Apart from lawnmowers, five brushcutter models are also assembled at the facility.

HMA moved into its purpose-built, 17,500 square-metre Somerton facility in 2009 to meet its growing manufacturing and warehousing requirements.

Honda Power Equipment National Sales Manager, Ray Briffa, said the brand was proud to support local business and create job opportunities for Australians in the manufacturing sector.

“Customers who buy Honda not only receive one of the world’s toughest and most durable lawnmowers, they invest in a product assembled right here in Melbourne by local workers,” Mr Briffa said.

“We also endeavour to use Australian parts where possible in all of our lawnmowers.”

Work carried out at Somerton includes sub-assembly of blades, catchers and smaller parts in readiness for full assembly on the production line. The end result is then subjected to Honda’s rigorous quality control procedures.

Honda operates 197 manufacturing facilities in 28 countries outside of Japan, producing motorcycles, cars, outboard engines and power equipment for the brand’s 20-million-plus customers each year.

Honda’s premium products are engineered to deliver the most advanced technology to operators thanks to a $5.5 billion worldwide research and development program.

“Here at Honda, we produce the most advanced lawn mowers in the world to ensure our customers receive the highest quality product that money can buy,” Mr Briffa said.

After testing the waters last season with one off lease drives, Tim Boyle, Kris Walton and Danny Buzadzic will move to the V8 Utes category for a full season in the 2012 Auto One V8 Ute Racing Series – protected by Armor All.

Boyle made his debut on the Gold Coast last year, and although he was held up in an unlucky incident in Race 3, the part-time actor couldn’t get enough of the racing and has decided to come back for more.

“The Series is a lot of fun and I’m ready to make the next step from state to national racing. It’s much more professional in the Utes and I enjoyed it a lot more than state competition. I’m looking forward to having a lot of fun this year and can’t wait to go racing,” said Boyle.

Boyle will drive James Brock’s Holden, which was raced last year by Brendan Cook, who will step down from the Series this year. Cook’s 2011 Teammate Ryan Hansford will be joined by fellow Queenslander Kris Walton in the Series. Walton drove in two rounds in 2012 after winning a race on debut in Sandown. Walton will also drive a Truckline backed Ford and the two will be managed by Queensland based Rod Dawson.

Danny Buzadzic is looking forward to a full year in the Series after testing his V8 Ute skills at Sandown and Sydney last year. Buzadzic is expecting some good advice from his cousin, former V8 Ute Champion Marcus Zukanovic.

“Marcus will come to a few rounds and I’ll definitely call on him for some advice. I’m extremely excited about everything. I can’t wait to get the Western General Body Works Falcon on the grid. It has all new parts and we are working hard to get it ready for Clipsal,” said Buzadzic.

Buzadzic will also be backed by Matt Harvey, head mechanic from the winning 2012 V8 Ute of Chris Pither.

“We’ve got some good support for the car. All of the guys in the V8 Utes are great and I know the guys from Big Gun Racing will also always be there for support,” he said.

Buzadzic bought his car off long-time V8 Ute supporter turned driver Gary Carson, who will step out of the Utes after driving for three years.

Motorsport veteran Charlie O’Brien will also hang up the gloves from V8 Ute driving and recently sold his car to 2011 runner-up David Sieders.

2011 debutants Nathan Pretty and Cameron McConville will also be back for another year in the Series along with the V8 Ute Wildcard Ute, which saw the likes of Tony Longhurst, Dean Canto, Marcus Zukanovic, Tim Blanchard, Marcus Marshall, Adam Macrow, David Besnard and Charlie O’Brien steer it last year.

The V8 Utes first round will kick-off at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, 1 – 4 March.

The 2012 Series consists of 24 races over eight rounds raced throughout Australia covering six states and one territory.

National construction company BMD is starting a large recruitment drive this month to attract more staff to meet its increased project commitments for 2012/13.

The company is looking to employ construction and project managers, engineers, safety personnel and skilled labourers for projects between Mackay and Townsville.

BMD Executive Director Scott Power said the recruitment drive was in response to a tightening labour market and the affects of the mining boom.

“We’re winning new contracts almost on a weekly basis and we need more skilled workers to deliver these exciting projects,” Mr Power said.

“There is a lot of demand for the type of workers we are looking to recruit but we are confident that we will attract highly experienced staff to fulfil the vacancies.”

“The company has established offices in key regional areas and it offers family-friendly workplaces that deliver ongoing career development and training and a range of health and wellbeing activities.”

One employee who knows first hand the opportunities that exist within BMD is Dale Byrne.

Mr Byrne joined BMD in Townsville in 2003 as an undergraduate studying Construction Management at James Cook University.

He was aware of the company and its respected reputation.

“I was so excited to have the opportunity to work with BMD. I started working in an administration role with the company in the Townsville office and at the Lavarack Barracks and I then had five months working on Christmas Island.

“Soon after in 2007, I was appointed to manage the new office in Mackay and I was promoted to Project Manager in 2008. Now I am back in Townsville and I’m responsible for approximately 60 employees.

“Working for BMD and having the opportunity to hold additional responsibility has improved my skills. It’s not about working on big projects, it is the range of projects that I work on which is most valuable.

“For me, it’s the diversity of the roles on offer which is what makes BMD so attractive ,” he added

To find out more about the positions on offer or to apply for a specific role, send your CV and covering letter to qldjobs@bmd.com.au

By Martin Eade - ASPAC GROUP – www.aspacgroup.com.au

During November I was fortunate enough to embark on the trip of a lifetime as I followed in the footsteps of a legend, and an inspiration to many including myself, Sir Edmund Hillary, to the base camp of Mount Everest.

While Sir Ed and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay stood on the top of this majestic and powerful mountain for the first time on May 29th 1953, my goal was much less ambitious , satisfied with getting to the bottom but still in rarefied air at 5340 Mtrs. (Everest summit is at 8850 mtrs)

To put it in to perspective Australia’s tallest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko is 2228 Mtrs, less than half the height of Everest base camp, New Zealands highest peak, Mount Cook is also well short at 3754 Mtrs.

Throughout the 25 day, 300km trek I was joined by 12 other intrepid travellers, 30 sherpas, porters and cooks as well as a copy of the country’s most influential magazine.. The Australian Arbor Age !!

Civil Works Expo 2012 at Lardner Park is more than just a trade show. Thousands of patrons will attend the three-day event in February, to see and operate the millions of dollars of equipment showcased.

Retaining its position as the premier industry exhibition of its type in Victoria, the Civil Works Expo is specifically tailored for the growing civil construction industry, and incorporates the ever-popular Trucks in Action event.

Civil Works Expo is held from Thursday 16 to Saturday 18 February 2012, at Lardner Park near Warragul, just east of Melbourne. All aspects of equipment and services relevant to the civil construction public works sector, and the associated industries will be on display.

The event is set to transform the rolling green paddocks into a virtual work site, with the most comprehensive range of options being both showcased and demonstrated in one place.

For an industry that owns some 40,000 items of plant and equipment, the Expo provides a cost-effective way to demonstrate and compare machinery.

The Expo has a proud tradition of being a pivotal date in the industry calendar. “The Lardner Park Civil Works Expo will be the key Victorian civil construction trade event for 2012,” said Mr Cullino, the CEO (Victoria) Civil Contractors.

There are both static and interactive exhibits at the 2012 Civil Works Expo. The popular machinery demonstration area, again sponsored by Saferoads, allows prospective purchasers to “trial before you buy” on a large range of popular machines such as excavators, skid steers & backhoes, within three areas fully enclosed with safety barriers. There are also a number of exhibitors such as Case & Supergroups (with the Kubota brand) where you can trial machines on their individual sites.

The Trucks In Action component of the Expo has its own Pit-Lane at Lardner Park, for the huge array of trucks of all sizes and makes, determined to prove they have the performance to match their shiny duco.

The winning format continues today, putting trucks and trucking equipment to the test under typical load and road conditions. Prospective buyers can choose from a range of trucks supplied by leading manufacturers, and join the driver around a 9 km test route.

The diversity of activities offered at Civil Works Expo will be further expanded in 2012, with 4-hour “Spotters” & “Traffic Management” refresher courses being run by the Victorian Civil Contractors Federation “Civil Train”, during Civil Works Expo. For more information email civiltrainvic@civilcontractors.com, or phone Christina Froelich (03) 9819-5770. You can visit the Expo and update your skills on the same day.

The 2012 Civil Works Expo is again supported and endorsed by key industry bodies, including the Civil Contractors Federation, Municipal Works Officers Association, Institute of Public Works Engineering and the Road Marking Industry Association of Australia.

In recognition of their members’ ever-increasing use and purchase of earthmoving equipment, the plumbing and electrical industry peak bodies have become new supporters of Civil Works Expo.

Master Plumbers & Mechanical Services Association of Australia, and the National Electrical and Communications Association, have come on board this year to endorse the Expo to their members, along with the Construction Materials Processors Association, and Austab – the Australian Stabilisation Industry Association.

Industry seminars and luncheons are popular events during the three-day Expo program. An impressive range of interesting and entertaining seminars & luncheons will take place in the new Lardner Park Exhibition Centre during each day of the event (for further information www.lardnerpark.com.au )

Both exhibitors and visitors alike highly regard the Civil Works Expo and recognise the event as a valuable opportunity to assist in making informed purchasing as well as renewing or establishing contacts and sharing industry information.

Mobil Oil and the Commonwealth Bank & the Baw Baw Shire Council continue their valued support as Strategic Partners of the 2012 Civil Works Expo.

For more than 37 years Kubota Japan has been manufacturing Hydraulic Excavators. Starting back in 1974 with the KH-1 and now comprising of a product line up that is second to none in engineering concept and design as well as operator comfort and performance.

At the forefront of the Kubota Design is information that is sourced throughout the world from Kubota Excavator Owners. This sees Kubota Engineers travelling the world surveying Kubota Excavator Owners on what they like about their machines and what improvements that they would like to see done for future models.

This was the case for several Kubota Customers this year when Kubota Japan despatched 2 of their employees to conduct customer surveys of the owners of the recently released KX057-4 and U55-4 series.

The survey was headed by Mr Haruhiro Yabuuchi Section Manager Customer Technical Support Department Construction Machinery Division, accompanying him was Mr Shinsuke Kamada Manger Marketing Construction Machinery Division. Both Staff are based in Hirakata at the Kubota Construction Equipment Factory about an hour out of Osaka. Also accompanying them were representatives from Kubota Tractor Australia, Mr Kzumei Suehira –Executive Co-Ordinator Engineering and Mr Warren Green – Industrial Product Manager based at the Australian Head Office for Kubota in Melbourne. The survey was schedule to coincide with 18 month anniversary of the newly released -4 series excavators.

With the machines being 18 months old it presents the perfect opportunity for the engineers to see any issues that may occurred and also provides a chance for the owners and operators to suggest any improvements that they feel would enhance the overall performance and operation of the excavator advised Mr Green. Kubota has always had a reputation for designing a machine that is highly efficient whilst not compromising on operator comfort. Kubota feels that to have an efficient machine you must first make sure the operator is comfortable; by keeping the operator comfortable operating the machine becomes a pleasure resulting in a more productive operator advised Mr Green.

With a more productive operator jobs are accomplished both quickly and easily resulting in the ability to complete more jobs in a day giving the owner a greater return on his investment in the new -4 series excavator.

The survey looks at excavator applications and also looks at features owners and operators feel could be improved for the future generations of excavators. It also looks at basic things such as the ease at which the front windows can be opened and the way the bonnets and side cowlings open and close after the machines have been in operation to ensure reliability and quality remains synonymous with the Kubota name.

The journey started in Cairns and worked its way down the East Coast stopping off in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to speak with owners and operators of the newly released -4 series excavators.

The results will be collated with the results from around the world and these will be used to influence the design of any future models that Kubota developed advised Mr Green.

IRWIN Racing is ready to go full steam ahead into 2012 after recently announcing that Lee Holdsworth will drive for the team and today revealing its livery for the impending season.

IRWIN Racing is the first team to show off its new season war paint, taking advantage of a big crowd at the weekend’s Sydney Telstra 500 to wrap the new car and pull the covers off.

Team sponsor, IRWIN Tools, ran a nation-wide competition searching for the perfect design to showcase its colours. Bathurst based apprentice sign writer Sam Dwyer submitted several designs, and was a runaway winner.

For IRWIN Racing Team Principal Ross Stone, launching the 2012 colours early means that after the end of season Christmas break he can hit the season running.

“The IRWIN Racing Ford is looking really good, young Sam (Dwyer) has done an outstanding job designing it,” said IRWIN Racing Team Principal Ross Stone.

“We’ll tweak it a little, but I think everyone agrees that the IRWIN Ford will look really good when it hits the track next March.

“We’re really looking forward to next year, it’s almost like a fresh start, but we carry on with all the hard work that we’ve done this year.

“The homework’s all been done, we’ve just got to make sure we cook the cake right and it comes out good, which I am confident it will.”

Bathurst apprentice sign writer Sam Dwyer could not contain his excitement when he saw his artwork on the IRWIN Racing Ford.

“The car looks unbelievable, I can’t believe what I’m seeing,” said Sam Dwyer.

“I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out, it looks fantastic.

“I was trying to give it that corporate look. I wanted to keep it clean, simple, but effective. I wanted to give it a racey look but didn’t want to go over the top

“I’m looking forward to seeing the IRWIN Ford on the track at the Clipsal 500; I think that’s when everything will sink in. It’s been a whirlwind.”

IRWIN Tools Managing Director Nick Pritchard likes what he sees. With the announcement of IRWIN’s new driver and the livery revealed he is looking forward to the 2012 season.

“V8 Supercars is a big sport, to achieve success you’ve got to get well ahead of the game,” said Pritchard.

“We’ve learned over the years that the more prepared we are the better we will be during the year.

“Were probably more prepared this year than we have ever been before. Next year is an important year for us, so we are getting as many things as we can organised before we hit 2012 and the first event in Adelaide.”

Stone agrees with Prichard. With the 2011 season coming to an end, plans are already underway for the up and coming 2012 V8 Supercars championship.

“At the moment we go into the last event ninth in the championship, which is solid, but not spectacular,” said Stone.

“We always set goals, the goal for the team this year was to have all three cars in the top 12, which we are on target to do.

“I have a lot of ideas in my head in regard to next year already. We will sit down and talk about 2012 next week where I expect we’ll have high expectations.”

The all new 2012 IRWIN Racing livery will debut at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, March 1-4, 2012.
